SERVICES

Child Psychotherapy

I creatively engage kids with interventions tailored to individual needs in fun ways.  When kids are struggling at school, I am available to communicate and collaborate with school staff.

I equip & coach parents/guardians to facilitate attachment, meet kids’ needs, and handle challenging behaviors.  I utilize principles & tools from Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (livesinthebalance.com) to equip kids and parents to work through conflicts and challenges without explosive behaviors and draining meltdowns.  I have been trained in using EMDR with children to address trauma, anxiety, phobias, and negative self-beliefs.

Areas of work include but not limited to:

  • trauma (including abuse, neglect, bullying, medical experiences, and other scary events)

  • anxiety

  • sensory processing disorder

  • family stressors (e.g. divorce/separation, remarriage…)

  • transitions (e.g  relocating, changing schools…)

  • grief

  • ADHD

  • learning disabilities

  • depression

  • OCD

  • body-focused repetitive disorders

  • behavior disorders

  • social skills deficits

Adolescent Psychotherapy

My office is a safe place for teens & young adults to be heard and get help as they individuate and separate from parents.   I coach parents to provide boundaries and incremental opportunities for independence, while preserving relationships with teens. College students work with me to address past issues and current challenges, positioning themselves for the future.

Areas of work include but not limited to:

  • eating disorders
  • self-injury
  • trauma (abuse, sexual assault, and others)
  • ADHD
  • peer and relationship issues

  • life transitions (e.g. to next level of schooling, moving away from home…)
“Laura was very calming and patient with my daughter. It was very difficult to get my daughter to go to first session. As time went on, my daughter would tell me when she felt the need to see Laura. And now, as my daughter and I talk she does admit that she was very angry and upset with me at the time, but now she understands that it did help her through some stress and anxiety issues.”

– Adult client with PTSD described Laura as

“skilled, knowledgable, compassionate, and equipped to help with post trauma issues effectively. She was able to help me cope with current challenges as well as helping me understand and deal with post trauma issues stemming from sexual abuse as a child. I am empowered now to set effective boundaries, recognize triggers, and express need effectively.”

Premarital Counseling

Research shows that couples who participate in premarital counseling have higher marital satisfaction and lower rates of divorce (as compared to those who do not participate). As a trained Prepare and Enrich Facilitator, I administer Prepare and Enrich assessments and structure counseling per each unique couple’s needs. Click here for more information on Prepare and Enrich.  I work with churches and individual couples.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that facilitates healing from disturbing life experiences, anxiety, addictions, and compulsive behaviors.  In many cases, EMDR moves people through the healing process more quickly than traditional psychotherapy.  EMDR is well supported by research and is now recognized as an effective treatment for trauma and other disturbing experiences by organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization and the Department of Defense. For more information, click here.

“EMDR was key in unlocking what was buried, bolted, and deeply protected so that I could experience release from deep seated pain. I experienced freedom from ideas that did not reflect who I am or who I want to become,”

–  Adult client, survivor of childhood abuse
